Transformer Enhancement Case

Enhancing Transformer Capacity to Enable Full-Power Operation of a Charging Station in Spain

FFD POWER Transformer Enhancement Case

Project Overview

100kWp Photovoltaic System with 20kW Transformer for a 120kW Charge Station Project, Mallorca, Spain.

Case Analysis

The transformer in this system has a capacity of only 20kW, while the charge station’s maximum design capacity is 120kW. Although the photovoltaic system has a peak capacity of 100kWp, its output is highly variable, leading to a significant risk of overloading the transformer. This could severely impact the safety and lifespan of the transformer and associated equipment.

FFD POWER Solution

To address these challenges, integrate an FFD POWER 100kW/215kWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) on the AC side. The BESS will store excess energy generated during peak sunlight periods and charge from the grid when the transformer has spare capacity, as detected by the EMS monitoring grid input at levels below the transformer’s 20kW rating. If the PV output is insufficient or the charge station load exceeds capacity, leading to transformer overload, the EMS will detect grid input exceeding the transformer’s rating. The BESS will then discharge, reducing the transformer load to within its safe operating limit of 20kW, effectively enhancing the transformer’s capacity and ensuring reliable operation.
