Off-Grid Power System Case

Achieving a 24/7 Independent and Sustainable Off-Grid Power System in Nigeria

FFD POWER Off-Grid Power System Case

Project Overview

125kW / 1.4MWh BESS with 450kWp Photovoltaic System for a 90kW Load Operating 20 Hours Daily in Kaduna, Nigeria

Case Analysis

In this case, solar energy is the sole power source for a system operating in an area with excellent sunlight conditions. While the abundant solar resource in the region provides a strong foundation for renewable energy generation, the key challenge lies in maintaining a stable and continuous power supply for a load that operates 20 hours a day.

FFD POWER Solution

To address these challenges, the integration of a well-sized Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) is essential, with a capacity of 1.4MWh. The BESS stores excess solar energy during the day and supplies power during night-time or when solar production is insufficient. With an appropriately designed BESS, the system ensures that the 90kW load operates seamlessly across the full 20-hour period, maintaining system reliability and efficiency. To further enhance system stability and protect against potential electrical disturbances, an isolation transformer is also incorporated to mitigate harmonics and provide electrical isolation, ensuring the smooth operation of sensitive equipment.

This solution not only allows for a fully solar-powered system to meet demanding operational requirements but also enhances energy independence and significantly reduces the reliance on fossil fuel-based backup systems. As a result, it offers both a sustainable and cost-effective energy strategy, providing long-term savings and promoting environmental responsibility.
