Finland 3.5MW/7MWh Grid-side Peak Shaving And Frequency Regulation Project
Share:
Located in Finland, this project features a 3.4MW/7.1MWh grid-side battery energy storage system (BESS) designed to provide peak shaving and frequency regulation services. By leveraging advanced energy storage technology, the project enhances grid flexibility and stability, reduces reliance on fossil-fuel-based peaking plants, and supports higher integration of renewable energy sources.
Equipped with an intelligent Energy Management System (EMS), the system can dynamically respond to grid conditions, providing power dispatch, frequency response, and load balancing services. Moreover, the project will participate in Finland’s national grid market mechanisms such as Frequency Containment Reserves (FCR) and Fast Frequency Reserve (FFR), optimizing its economic performance while adapting to evolving market demands.
As part of the clean energy transition, this energy storage installation plays a critical role in helping Finland achieve its carbon neutrality goals.
Market Role & Revenue Model
- Frequency Containment Reserve (FCR-N / FCR-D): Participates in Fingrid’s standard and dynamic frequency control markets, earning both capacity and performance-based revenues.
- Fast Frequency Reserve (FFR): Delivers sub-second frequency support during system disturbances, with high economic returns.
- Energy Arbitrage: Charges during low-price hours and discharges during peak-price periods to gain from energy price spread.
- Potential Capacity Compensation Mechanisms (if introduced): Acts as a reliability asset for the grid in the future.
We are committed to providing you with the best service possible.
Operation Modes & Strategy
- Frequency Regulation Mode: FCR-N (Normal): Continuous automatic regulation around ±50Hz for standard frequency balancing. FCR-D (Disturbance): Full power response to large frequency deviations. FFR (Fast Frequency Reserve): Ultra-fast response (100ms–1s) to critical frequency events.
- Peak Shaving & Arbitrage:EMS executes charge/discharge cycles based on price forecasts and demand curves to achieve "buy low, sell high" arbitrage.
- Backup / Reserve Capacity:Provides spinning or non-spinning reserve in case of generation drop or grid contingency, supporting grid security.
- Multi-market Co-Optimization:EMS supports co-optimized operation across multiple services (e.g., FCR and arbitrage), maximizing revenue via intelligent scheduling.
- Data-driven Predictive Operation:Predictive models using weather, load, and price data enable feedforward control, early scheduling, and reduced thermal/SOC stress.
