With Ukraine’s ongoing push for renewable energy and sustainable transportation, the number of electric vehicles (EVs) is growing rapidly, creating increasing demand for charging infrastructure. However, in many regions, the local grid is relatively weak and cannot support the high-power demand of multiple fast-charging EVs simultaneously. In addition, volatile electricity prices have led to higher operating costs. This project introduces an energy storage system (ESS) to support the grid, enabling smart, cost-effective, and green EV charging station operations.
Operation Strategy
- Peak Shaving and Valley Filling:The energy storage system charges during off-peak hours when electricity prices are low and discharges during peak demand periods to supply power for EV charging. This significantly reduces electricity costs and improves economic efficiency.
- Emergency Backup Power:In the event of grid failure or voltage fluctuations, the ESS can quickly switch to backup power mode, ensuring uninterrupted operation of the charging station and enhancing reliability.
- Load Balancing:The system continuously monitors grid loads and charging demand. It intelligently manages energy output from the ESS to avoid sudden spikes in power consumption, reducing stress on the local grid infrastructure.
- Green Energy Integration:The system is designed for future integration with solar PV systems, enabling a comprehensive “PV + Storage + Charging” solution. This increases the utilization of renewable energy and supports the development of low-carbon transportation.
